Memoir Medicine

writing your way back to life
diary drawing

Have you ever felt that life is something that just happens to you? That secrets are trapped within, leaving you tired and grey, cynical and heavy? Do you find regular talking therapies overwhelming or intimidating, so that you cannot open up and say what you really need to? Then, therapeutic writing may be for you.

Memoir Medicine: A Different Kind of Writing

Our sessions are not focused on spelling, structure, grammar or literary polish; it’s about self-expression. Together, we use writing to:
  • Release Suppressed Emotions: Giving a voice to the grief, anger, or fear that talk therapy often can’t reach.

  • Reduce Rumination: Helping the brain "de-fragment" so thoughts flow less painfully.

  • Build a New Narrative: Shifting from "what happened to me" to "who I am becoming".

My Approach

I am a trauma therapist committed to helping you safely navigate the deepest parts of your story. My work is grounded in specialised techniques that honour both your past and your potential:

  • EMDR & Parts Therapy: I'm qualified to use EMDR to take the "charge" out of distressing memories and to use Parts Hypnotherapy (Internal Family Systems) to help you connect with and listen to the different voices within that are trying to keep you safe through silence, procrastination, or brain fog.

  • Jungian Techniques: I am also trained to apply Jungian techniques to our sessions, and we can explore the symbolism in your dreams and writing to uncover deeper meaning in your life's journey.

  • Memory as Medicine: I specialise in helping you use the art of memoir to re-author your life, turning your lived experience into a source of wisdom and strength.

Sessions are 30, 60, or 120 mins (online or in person), confidential, and respectful. You will be given prompts and questions to explore during the session and to contemplate before the next session. Each session is structured to meet your unique needs. You are one of a kind, and so are sessions. Some clients write during sessions; others prefer to write on their own time and bring their work to sessions for discussion. Email me to discuss what you want to explore, and together we will decide the best way to meet your needs. You will never be pressured to have more sessions than you want or need. Many people find six sessions sufficient, while others find two sufficient.  Occasionally, when someone wants to complete a memoir for future publication with support along the way, they stay for longer. It is up to you. Take what you need; you are the protagonist in the process, not me. I am just your guide.

Frequently asked questions

Q.  How much do sessions cost?

Fees depend on the length and duration of sessions. I also offer a sliding scale and gift economy or skill exchange for those living on extremely low incomes, exchanges of skills, services, or goods can be used to obtain services. If anxious about what this means, people in the past have exchanged items such as paintings, books, pots of honey, rice, and bread, and others have also exchanged skills such as language tuition, yoga sessions, and reflexology. Feel free to query if you would like to exchange something and bypass using money or to discuss the length and duration of sessions.

Q. Do I have to be creative?

A. No, you do not have to see yourself as creative. As Camus wrote, "The aim of art, on the contrary, is not to legislate or reign supreme, but rather to understand first of all".  In this light, your creative project is not an assessment of your creative skills or aptitude, but rather an awakening of the creative principle available within us all. It can help with:

  • Processing complex emotions.

  • Overcoming fear and self-doubt.

  • Increase empathy for self and others.

  • Reclamation of self and identity after abuse.

  • Self-reflection and understanding, much like a mirror shows you yourself.

As Jung writes, "we never need to ask ourselves what the material consists of or what it means, but this question forces itself upon us as soon as we enter the visionary mode of creation". We will explore these questions together, and you will be supported and guided at every step.

Q. Are sessions confidential?

A. All sessions are confidential, *subject to the limits of UK law. I will never ask you to provide a testimonial or share/advertise anything related to my therapy services on social media. You will not be required to take part in any of my research or future publications. You will receive a contract before therapy begins, outlining expectations and your client's rights.

*UK law requires disclosure of information in cases of child and vulnerable adult abuse, violent plans towards a third party, and terrorism plots.

I offer a copywriting service for therapists, wellbeing companies, and community groups, creating informative, trustworthy, and transformative content. I have created content for Sleepiest, LIFE charity, and SOBs, as well as writing confidentially for individual counsellors, including e-books, courses, and ongoing blog content.

As a trauma therapist experienced in mental health and social care, I specialise in copy that cares. No filler, no fluff—just well-researched copy for those you serve.

I bring ten years of experience in TV and radio scriptwriting, including pitching and packaging ideas for commissioners. These skills, combined with my background, allow me to shape your reader’s journey with care and precision. For me, effective copy is all about nurturing the relationship between you and your audience. Drawing on depth psychology, my work aims to build trust and deliver positive outcomes for everyone involved.

I’m excited by what I do. Every day, I work with others who care about making people’s lives better, including community groups, individuals, charities, wellbeing companies, faith groups, individual therapists, and busy creatives needing online support.
